Snapshots & backups

Two ways to protect your data: snapshots you take yourself, and backups we take for you every week.

Snapshots

Open the server's Snapshots tab and choose Take snapshot. It captures the whole disk at that moment. You pay $0.05 per GB of snapshot size each month, billed hourly.

To restore, stop the server first, then choose Restore on the snapshot. The disk returns to exactly how it was; anything written since is lost.

For databases, stop the database service (or the server) before a snapshot to get a perfectly consistent copy.

Automatic backups

Turn on Backups when creating a server or later in its Backups tab. It adds 20% to the plan price — for example $3.80 a month on a K2. You can also run one manual backup per day.

To restore, choose a backup and Restore; it replaces the server's current disk.

When a server is deleted

Deleting a server deletes its backups and its snapshots, and their billing stops. If your account is closed for non-payment, snapshots and backups are deleted with the servers — see Billing.
